Community Reads and All-School Reads: Young Adult Adaptations and Young Readers’ Editions

As we approach August, school and community leaders are looking for ways to set the tone for a new school year. Each community will have its own expectations to set, academic priorities to spotlight, or values to align on, but no matter what the focus or growth area, a community read or all school read can be a powerful way to bring people together.

Books prompt reflection, they promote empathy, they can be the inroad to conversation—especially difficult ones. Importantly, titles selected for community reads and all-school reads should be accessible, so that everyone in a community can meet on the page. This is where offering young adult adaptations and young readers editions as an option or as the selected title can be extraordinarily helpful. Adaptations make important topics in nonfiction ACCESSIBLE for younger readers. Adaptations are shorter in length and in some cases have reduced violence, sexual content, and complexity so readers can read nonfiction work that is developmentally appropriate. For all-school reads, adaptations allow a wider group of readers to engage with a topic.

Browse some of the titles we have adapted for young people, so adults and students of all reading levels can share and discuss a great book together.
