The idea of a “common read” is that it should appeal to the masses. It seems my home city of San Diego, California is taking their decision directly to the people for their next community-wide selection. The powers that be have narrowed the contenders down to three for the One Book, One San Diego program and are inviting readers to vote on the local PBS station’s website.

I’m proud to recognize the two Random House, Inc. contenders: Dreamers of the Day by Mary Doria Russell and Outcasts United by Warren St. John. It seems Mr. St. John’s book, which has already been adopted for common reading programs at two universities, is the favorite so far.

This begs the question, how do your programs select books?
